GRADE 17 LOCATION OF POSITION Annapolis, MD POSITION DUTIES The Communications Associate will support and help drive the agency's media relations activity, internal and external communications, speechwriting, branding, and messaging strategies.
The Associate reports to the Media Relations Manager and supports the Communications Team with the execution of the agency's communications strategies.
The Associate is responsible for a broad range of duties and responsibilities including, but not limited to, copyediting; responding to media inquiries; pitching media stories; drafting and distributing press notifications and content (quotes, media statements, media advisories, op-eds, articles, and press releases); planning, coordinating, and managing press events.
MINIMUM
Qualifications Education:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.
Experience:
Five years of administrative staff or professional work.
Notes:
Candidates may substitute 30 credit hours from an accredited college or university for each year up to four years of the required experience.
Candidates may substitute the possession of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and one year of experience in administrative staff or professional work for the required experience.
Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master's degree from an accredited college or university for the required experience.

S.
Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer involving staff work related to the administration of rules, regulations, policy, procedures and processes, or overseeing or coordinating unit operations or functioning as a staff assistant to a higher ranking commissioned officer on a year-for- year basis for the required experience.

S.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, English, or related field.
2-3 years of experience in media relations, journalism, communications, or related field.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to prioritize tasks and meet tight (short) writing and copyediting deadlines.
Strong copyediting skills.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to listen well and positively represent the organization and its mission.
Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple projects and stay on deadline.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Ability to work independently.
Willingness and ability to travel (within the state) occasionally.
LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS Employees in this classification may be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle.
Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Please note:
Administrative Staff experience differs from general administrative experience.
Administrative staff encompasses discretion and independent judgment directly related to policies, operations, or supervision of personnel.
A candidate with administrative staff experience will demonstrate the ability to identify the root cause of issues, develop alternative courses of action and implement new policies or procedures.
General administrative experience is routine support work that is often present in administrative assistant or other office roles.
